big game survey

The Big Game Survey is a summary of the number of big game animals including caribou, black bear and moose, harvested by each community and hunting zone. The Big Game survey has been maintained since 1988.

The purpose of the Big Game Survey is for wildlife management and conservation purposes. The trappers do not want to over harvest. By keeping a survey, they can monitor the number of species hunted.

The Cree Trappers Association may be the only group in North America that maintains their own records. Although sport hunters have limits placed on the number of animals they can hunt, the Cree Trappers do not. This is in accordance with the James Bay Agreement.

Summary reports can be found in the CTA section of the Cree GeoPortal.
