The Cree Trappers’ Association continues to work with and assists Quebec Ministere des Ressources Naturelles et de la Faune (MRNF) in the implementation of section 10.18 of the Paix des Braves Agreement which calls for Quebec to train and appoint one interested Cree hunter and trapper (normally the Cree tallyman) for the Cree traplines in the area of Cree primary interest under the meaning of section 24 of the JBNQA as Auxiliary Territorial Officer, for the primary purpose of improving the enforcement of hunting fishing and trapping legislation and regulation within each concerned trapline.
Since 2005 training of Tallymen as Wildlife Protection Auxiliary Officers (WPA) has been done by Quebec with the assistance from CRA and CTA to fill the required number of WPA positions. Once these WPA’s have completed their training they are awarded with metal badges to signify their authority as assistants to the Wildlife Protection Officers. Of the 299 traplines and the corresponding number of Tallymen in the territory, 271 have completed their training leaving 28 still to be trained.
WPA’s are given a refresher course annually from Quebec with the help of CRA and CTA. This will continue in the years to come.
