Wildlife Protection Officers

The Cree Trappers’ Association continues to work with and assists Quebec Ministere des Ressources Naturelles et de la Faune (MRNF) in the implementation of section 10.17 of the Paix des Braves Agreement which calls for Quebec to maintain its existing compliment of Wildlife Protection Officers. As was done in the past, Quebec continues to train and hire additional Wildlife Protection Officers (22 WPO’s in all) in the territory as stated in this historic Agreement. Since 2003 recruitment and screening of candidates have been done by Quebec with the assistance from CRA and CTA to fill the required 22 Wildlife Protection Officers positions. To date seven (7) more WPO’s are still needed to fulfill that number of required positions. There was no recruiting of new candidates done through 2010-2011.

In March 2009 Environment Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and Ministry of Natural Resources and Wildlife of Quebec met with the representatives of the Cree Hunting, Fishing, and Trapping Coordinating Committee to seek support from CRA and CTA for their intention to have Multidisciplinary Wildlife Protection Officers in Northern Quebec. The Group was invited to make their presentation at the upcoming CTA Board of Directors meeting in June 2009. Upon making this presentation at the Board meeting, they again were invited to make the same presentation in each of the Cree Communities. Their objective was to meet with the Chief and Council, CTA representatives, youth and the tallymen in all of the nine Cree communities with the assistance from CRA and CTA. During the months from November 2009 to January 2010 five Cree Communities have been visited by this group. The other Communities will be visited at the later date. During this past fiscal year 2010-2011 the involvement from CTA was very limited because MRNF was busy in their development of their MultidisciplinaryWildlife Protection Officers Program in Northern Quebec.
